If you are the kind of driver that only wants to buy domestic cars but you also want to get the best fuel economy on a budget, check out the cheap American cars with good gas mileage here.

American manufacturers are making their cars more fuel efficient and cheaper these days, since they know those are some of the most important factors to car buyers today.

Most of the cheapest new cars on the market are also some of the smallest and most fuel efficient, outside of hybrids of course.

The 2012 Chevy Sonic has been a very big surprise success for Chevrolet. It has done much better in sales than expected since it was released. It starts at just $13,865 and can get up to 29 city / 40 hwy mpg. It is also one of the sportiest and athletic cheap cars on the road with its turbocharged 1.4L 4-cyl engine.

The 2013 Chevy Spark is another cheap and efficient car from Chevy. This little city driving car is all about efficiency, just like most smart cars are. It will start at $12,245, it is not only Chevy's smallest car, and it is its cheapest as well.

The 2012 Ford Fiesta is another fun to drive and fuel efficient American car. This subcompact from Ford gets nearly 29 city / 40 hwy mpg as well, and starts at just $13,200.

If you would want the most fuel efficient crossover SUV you can buy on a budget, the 2013 Ford Escape is the car you want. It starts at $22,470 and gets up to 23 city / 33 hwy mpg, and that's with the regular engine, not the hybrid.

The 2013 Dodge Dart is a new small sedan from Dodge. It is also very affordable, and it starts at just $15,995. It won't be the most fuel efficient American car when it hits dealerships this year, but it gets a respectable 25 city / 36 hwy mpg.
